Eveready Turns Zepto Deliveries Into Battery Collection

Eveready Industries India and Zepto have launched a doorstep household battery collection and recycling initiative, folding battery take-back into routine quick-commerce deliveries.
- Called ‘Batteries for Better’, described as India’s first doorstep household battery collection programme
- Shoppers select a “Return Battery” option at checkout, then hand used batteries to the delivery partner on arrival
- Collected batteries go to Eveready for recycling through authorised channels under Extended Producer Responsibility rules
- Launching across Delhi and Bengaluru, with plans to expand to more cities
- Participants get a certificate and benefits on later Eveready purchases through Zepto
The Diagnosis Underneath It
Devendra Meel, chief business officer at Zepto, said the biggest barrier to responsible disposal is not intent but convenience, and that most households have used batteries sitting in drawers because there has never been a simple everyday way to return them.
That is an unusually precise piece of consumer thinking for a sustainability announcement. Recycling campaigns almost always attack the intent problem, running awareness work at people who already agree with them, then discover that agreement was never the missing piece.
Why Quick Commerce Is The Right Pipe
The programme leans on Zepto’s last-mile network, turning a delivery that was already happening into a collection.
Reverse logistics is the expensive half of any take-back scheme, and it is why most stop at a collection bin in a shop that nobody visits for that purpose. A rider already standing at the door on a trip the customer paid for removes that cost almost entirely. Meel put the case plainly: every million household batteries collected can divert several tonnes of waste from mixed garbage into authorised recycling.
What Eveready Gets Out Of It
Anirban Banerjee, chief executive of Eveready Industries India, said the collaboration turns everyday deliveries into opportunities for responsible environmental action and supports circular economy practice in India.
There is a commercial engine here too, and it is not hidden: returning a battery earns benefits on the next Eveready purchase through Zepto, which makes disposal a repeat-purchase trigger. EPR compliance is a regulatory obligation for the company either way. Building it into a loyalty mechanic is what makes it a marketing asset rather than a cost line.
