Akshay Gandotra has joined Meta as global marketing lead for Business Messaging, in a role aimed at a very small audience.

  • Role: global marketing lead, Business Messaging, Meta
  • Products: the WhatsApp Business Platform and Business AI
  • Focus: executive engagement programmes, connecting C-suite leaders with AI and messaging
  • Joins from: Amazon Web Services, after more than five years
  • Announced: in a LinkedIn post

What The Akshay Gandotra Brief Actually Is

Executive engagement, not demand generation. The distinction matters: one is measured in pipeline and the other in whether a chief executive changes their mind about a category. Meta is selling business messaging into organisations where the decision is made well above the marketing team, and WhatsApp's consumer ubiquity in markets like India is not by itself an argument in a boardroom.

That is the gap this role sits in. A platform everybody's customers already use still has to explain why a company should route its service, sales and support through it, and that explanation is made person to person rather than in a campaign.

The Partner Marketing Years

The immediately preceding run was more than five years at Amazon Web Services, most recently as global partner marketing leader for SAP, and before that for VMware.

Partner marketing is the right apprenticeship for this. Both of those roles meant marketing somebody else's product alongside your own to a shared enterprise customer, which is structurally the same problem as persuading a business to build its customer communication on a platform it does not own.

A Long Run Through Data And Information Businesses

Earlier came vice president of product marketing at IRI and vice president of marketing at Infogroup, with the career beginning at LexisNexis as brand marketing manager, plus marketing roles at Wright State University and consulting at NCR Corporation.

IRI, Infogroup and LexisNexis are all businesses that sell information to professionals who are sceptical of marketing, which is a useful grounding for a product whose pitch is increasingly about what an AI agent will be allowed to do with a company's customer conversations.
