Adidas Originals Marks Its Connaught Place Debut With Five Local Institutions

Adidas Originals is opening a store in Connaught Place, and has built the run-up around five establishments that have been trading in the neighbourhood far longer than it has.
- Brand: Adidas Originals
- Location: Connaught Place, Delhi
- Partners: Nizam's, Nirula's, Gillu Florist, Mahatta & Co. and Radio & Gramophone House
- Formats: special menus and co-branded details, an Originals-inspired bouquet, an archival photography showcase and a music-led activation
What Adidas Originals Is Buying Here
A global sportswear brand opening in Connaught Place has no shortage of ways to announce itself. Billboards, a launch film, a celebrity at the door. It has chosen instead to attach itself to a kathi roll counter, an ice cream chain, a florist, a photo studio and a gramophone shop.
The exchange is legitimacy. Connaught Place is one of the few Indian retail districts with a genuine memory attached to it, and a new store there arrives as an outsider by definition. Standing alongside businesses that have been part of the place for decades is a way of asking to be read as part of it rather than as another international unit in a colonnade.
The Activations Are Format-Matched
The detail worth noting is that each partner is doing something native to itself rather than hosting a branded pop-up. Nizam's and Nirula's are working through menus. Gillu Florist is doing it in flowers. Mahatta & Co., a photography institution, is showing an archive of the neighbourhood. Radio & Gramophone House is doing it through music.
That is harder to organise than a uniform set of takeovers and much less likely to read as a brand tourist passing through. It also gives each location a reason to participate that its own customers will recognise.
Where The Risk Sits
Heritage borrowing is a well-worn move and it curdles quickly when the older business is reduced to set dressing. The distance between a collaboration and an appropriation is mostly whether the smaller party gets anything durable out of it, and an activation that ends when the store opens tends to answer that question unfavourably.
The counter-argument is that Originals has run this playbook in other cities and that the sub-brand's whole positioning rests on locality and self-expression rather than on performance. This is the line it has been selling for years; Connaught Place is a test of whether it holds in a district with strong opinions about itself.
