The Route Abhishek Mathur Took
Mathur announced the promotion on LinkedIn, writing that he was happy to share he had been promoted to director of digital buying at Publicis Groupe.
His record runs across the digital and media ecosystem, at Mindshare, OMD Worldwide, Performics.Convonix and Cybage, having started as a Google AdWords analyst. That opening line is worth noting. A decade ago the search analyst sat well below the media planner in an agency’s hierarchy, and now the person who understands auctions runs the buying.
What A Digital Buying Director Actually Controls
His work at the group has included digital marketing and connected TV initiatives, with a stated focus on digital marketing, new business partnerships and revenue generation.
Connected TV is the reason a promotion in this function reads as significant rather than routine. It is the one place where the old television budget and the programmatic buying stack meet, and getting it right requires someone fluent in the auction mechanics rather than in gross rating points.
Promoting From Inside
The elevation gives Mathur a broader mandate in digital buying at the group, adding to its leadership depth in digital media.
Media agencies have been buying senior digital talent from each other for years, at a premium. Promoting an associate director who already knows the group’s clients and its trading relationships is cheaper and, on the evidence of how often lateral hires leave inside two years, frequently the safer call.
