A Brief That Spans The Portfolio

Powdwal will work with senior leadership on strategic priorities across the group, covering growth opportunities, cross-functional initiatives and innovation, alongside business transformation and the search for new business models.

It is a wide brief, and the background behind it is wider than most strategy appointments. His career takes in sales, marketing, profit and loss ownership, information technology and consulting, which is an unusual combination in a discipline that more often produces specialists.

Financial Services, Technology And An Agency

The roster of previous organisations reads across three quite different industries. IndiaFirst Life and ICICI Bank sit in financial services, 3i Infotech in technology services, and JWT in advertising. He has also run his own consulting business.

Having carried a profit and loss line is the part that tends to separate a strategy officer who is listened to from one who is not. Strategy work that has never had to survive its own budget is a different thing from strategy work that has.
