Pixxel Raises 100 Million Dollars In The Largest Indian Space Round

Pixxel has raised 100 million dollars in a Series C round, the largest funding round an Indian space technology company has taken, led by Temasek and Seraphim.

What Pixxel Has Already Put In Orbit
Six Firefly satellites, which the company describes as the highest-resolution commercial hyperspectral constellation in the world. Hyperspectral imaging reads far more of the light spectrum than a conventional camera, which is what lets it distinguish a crop disease, a methane leak or a mineral deposit from orbit rather than simply photographing the ground.
Around that sits Aurora, its Earth intelligence software platform, the Honeybee constellation of high-resolution optical imaging satellites, and Gigapixxel, a next-generation satellite manufacturing facility that brings production in house rather than buying capacity. The company has contracts with NASA and the National Reconnaissance Office, multiple wins in the Indian Ministry of Defence iDEX challenges, and has been selected to lead India's first public-private Earth observation constellation of 12 satellites under the IN-SPACe programme.
Where The Money Goes
Four stated directions: expanding sensing capability, developing the Aurora intelligence layer, deepening sovereign Earth observation systems and accelerating manufacturing capacity. An orbital data-centre demonstration satellite is also planned.
The through line is a shift from selling images to selling answers. A satellite operator that only supplies pixels competes on resolution and price, both of which fall over time. Building the intelligence layer above the sensor is how that becomes a subscription rather than a commodity, and it is where most of this round is pointed.
