PhonePe Puts UPI On Feature Phones, No Internet Needed
PhonePe has brought UPI 123Pay to feature phones, letting users make UPI payments without a smartphone or an active internet connection.
- Rolling out first on select devices from Nokia, HMD, Lava International and Itel Mobile, with more manufacturers expected to follow
- Aimed at users with limited or unreliable mobile data, including areas still on older networks
- Supports person-to-person payments and merchant payments through a UPI ID, with scanning on handsets that have cameras
- Users can also check balances and see transaction history from the handset
- Activation needs no internet connection: accept the terms, pick a bank, then enter the final six digits of the debit card
Why UPI 123Pay Matters More Than It Sounds
Bill payments, mobile recharges and Aadhaar-enabled UPI onboarding are planned for later updates.
India’s payments story is usually told through smartphone numbers, which quietly excludes the tens of millions of people still on a keypad handset. Those users are not holding out for a better phone. They are on the wrong side of a data connection, and until now that put them on the wrong side of digital payments too.
The Detail That Makes It Work
Activation itself requires no internet, which is the part that decides whether a service like this is adopted or abandoned.
Plenty of products are technically usable offline but demand a one-time online setup, and that single requirement strands exactly the user the product was built for. Removing it means the phone in hand is enough, with no trip to a place with signal to get started.
What It Opens For Brands
Merchant payments through a UPI ID work on the same handsets.
For any brand selling into small-town and rural retail, the constraint has never been willingness to pay digitally, it has been the device on the other side of the counter. A keypad phone that can accept a UPI payment changes the arithmetic of where cashless commerce can actually reach.
