Amit Goel has joined Metro Brands as head of operations for Walkway, the company's value footwear arm. He arrives after more than a decade across some of India's largest retail floors.

  • Appointment: head of operations, Walkway, at Metro Brands
  • Start: Trent, as a floor manager
  • Bata: eight years, rising from retail manager to operations manager, overseeing more than 120 stores and 220,000 square feet
  • Landmark Group: 11 stores generating over ₹3,000 million a year
  • Most recently: assistant general manager at Baazar Style Retail, 50 stores and 350,000 square feet across north, east and central India

Amit Goel Built A Career On Square Feet

Goel's record is unusually operational for a senior retail appointment. The Bata stint alone covered more than 120 stores and an annual turnover north of ₹1,800 million, and the pattern since has been the same: more stores, more floor area, more of the machinery that keeps a chain profitable at scale. P&L management, cost-benefit analysis, category analysis and visual merchandising are the listed skills, and none of them are the glamorous end of the business.

That breadth across family fashion, value retail and footwear is what makes the move read as logical rather than opportunistic. Walkway is Metro Brands' value play, and value retail is unforgiving in a way premium is not: the margin is thinner, so execution discipline is most of the game.

The Brief Is Tier II And Below

His mandate covers operational excellence, customer experience and execution discipline as Walkway pushes into tier II to IV markets. That is the territory where he has spent much of his career, and it is where Indian footwear and value fashion are currently racing each other.

The wider pattern is worth noting. As chains move beyond metro India, the executives being handed expansion are increasingly the ones with genuine multi-format, multi-geography store operations behind them rather than head-office strategists. More appointments and moves.
