How AI Answers Are Collapsing the Top of the Marketing Funnel

AI answers are quietly rewriting brand awareness by collapsing the top of the traditional marketing funnel. For two decades, awareness lived on searchable results pages, ads and optimised content, but that wide top of the funnel no longer works the same way. When a Google AI Overview appears, the top-ranking result loses about 58% of its clicks, and zero-click searches, those that end without a single click to any website, reached 68% in early 2026, meaning two of every three searches now resolve on the results page itself.

  • AI answers are collapsing the top of the marketing funnel
  • A Google AI Overview cuts the top result's clicks by ~58%
  • Zero-click searches hit 68% in early 2026
  • Brands cited in AI Overviews get ~120% more clicks per impression

What the numbers on AI answers reveal

The data points to a structural shift rather than a temporary dip. A loss of 58% of clicks for the top-ranking result whenever an AI Overview appears signals that visibility no longer guarantees traffic in the way it once did. Combined with a 68% zero-click rate, the figures suggest that for most queries, the answer itself has become the destination. Brands that once measured success by rankings and click-through rates are now confronting a search environment where the page is rarely the endpoint of the customer journey.

Why presence beats position now

Yet the same data offers a counterpoint: brands mentioned in AI Overviews receive around 120% more clicks per impression than those left out entirely. That gap indicates being present within an AI-generated answer carries more weight than simply ranking well on a traditional results page. The upshot for marketers is a shift towards reputation and consistent presence across credible sources, because purchase decisions increasingly form in a space brands cannot directly control or observe. Instead of optimising solely for keywords, teams are being pushed to ensure their brand is referenced accurately and favourably wherever AI systems draw their information from.

This reframes the top of the funnel as an exercise in earning mentions across a wider ecosystem of credible sources, rather than owning a single ranked position. As zero-click behaviour becomes the norm rather than the exception, the brands that adapt fastest will be those that treat AI answers as the new front door to awareness, not a threat to be resisted.
